Owens family vacation visiting Playa Popoyo and Ometepe Island in Nicaragua

We had the best family vacation in Nicaragua! We planned everything online, and had a little bit of something for every member of the family. No vacation passes go without warm weather and surf, and Nicaragua promised both.  We started the trip in Guasacate Beach at Playa Popoyo on the Pacific coast.  It was gorgeous!  My husband surfed, while the kids and I played in the warm water.  Nicaragua Family Portraits | Owens Family

We stayed at the hotel, La Melting Elefante in Popoyo.  It's pretty neat, no wood used at all, just concrete made with the inspiration of a melting candle in mind.  As we were walking back to our hotel, we saw a big sea turtle meandering along on the beach.

While in Popoyo, we contacted Paso Popoyo Horse tour and took horseback rides through the jungle to see the howler monkeys!  Daniel was a great guide, showing us around and keeping the kids horse tethered to his horse.

We visited Ometepe Island after our stay at the beach.  We stayed at La Omaja hotel on the volcano Maderas.  It was gorgeous!  You have to take a ferry ride across Lake Nicaragua, which was pretty sketchy, but the island was my favorite part of the trip!  We hiked to the waterfall San Ramon, visited the beautiful mineral springs at Ojo de Agua, a coffee plantation at Finca Magdelana and found a traveling gypsy circus with acrobats and belly dancers (and Nike stealers).  La Omaja has an infinity pool that the kids loved overlooking the lake and active volcano Conception!  The restaurant is right by the pool, so you don't have to go far for ice cold Tonas and fresh smoothies!

I am so glad to have been able to fit in some quality time before wedding season fully kicks in!

xxo!
