Pete and Mike have beach ceremony in Duck, NC

It was such a treat to be able to photograph Mike and Pete's Outer Banks destination wedding in Duck, NC at the beautiful Sanderling Resort.  We've met a few times over the past year and ALMOST had an engagement session.  (Pete had a nasty tumble with a bad maple bacon donut!)

These two are so in love with each other and genuinely care for all the people around them.  Pete and Mike had put so much time and effort into this day, making it absolutely personal and special for not only them, but everyone involved- including vendors.  Brooke Mayo Photographers were so glad to be a part of this love story.

Mike and Pete live in San Francisco, CA.  One may wonder why these gents are traveling all the way across the U.S., from a state which recognizes gay marriage to marry in N.C -a state which doesn't.  The couple have a strong connection with our southern state.  Mike taught in NC and lived in a double-wide for a few years between corn and tobacco fields, he was hooked (one of their signature cocktails is 'the double-wide')!

Our grooms got ready in different locations, surrounded by their groomsmaids.  They have such a great group of friends and supporters helping all along the way.

A lot of our grooms opt for bow-ties. Almost all of them are unable to tie them their self.  Mike had his best lady and two cell phones of information to do the job!

The couple had a 'first look' on the beach. Mike has the most adorable look on his face as Pete made his way over the dunes!!!

Mike is a teacher, but he did a phenomenal job at all the graphic art work for their wedding! I could not believe he did all this himself! There were welcome to Duck packages (to get guests acquainted with the south...), personalized playing cards, trivia games, and mad libs.  The couple loves to travel, so the theme was "OBX Airways".  A faux airline to places they've been.  The invitations were boarding passes and plane tickets!  So clever!

Pete wrote Mike a love letter for the past 100 days counting down to their wedding day.  This had me choked up!  One of the sweetest things I've ever seen!  We took a picture with the couple at their photobooth with their wedding day USA Today with the heading 'Day of Pride'!

After first look, we had a little bit of play time with the couple and their wedding party. They are a hoot! A kite and a bunch of people ready to celebrate love and life! Our kind of party!

Mike had a good friend officiate their ceremony. He officiated her wedding a couple of years ago, so only fitting to return the favor. Did we mention we LOVE Mike's expressions?

A sweet ceremony with beautiful sunshine, and a light breeze off the Atlantic.

During the ceremony, sand dollars were passed out to everyone to make their wish for the couple on and then throw into the ocean.  The tiny dot above the 'a' in Mayo is one of our grooms wish right before heading out to sea.  Once the couple were pronounced united, they danced down the aisle to Pharrell's "Happy"!

The couple surprised their guests with a dove release provided by When Dove's Fly!  We hear Pete is 'most likely to get pooped on by a bird', but not on his wedding day!

The Flower Field did an amazing job with the couple's vision of sand fences to decorate the pavilion.  Green and purple everywhere!  The couple even incorporated their colors into the meal being served!

Lots and lots of heart felt toasts!  I don't think there was a dry eye in the house when Pete's step-mom gave her speech!  Although the couple had family that did not come to the wedding, the family and 'framily' that did make the trek over more than made up for it with the outpouring of love that was shown for these grooms.

Dorothy and her crew at The Flower Field did an amazing job at the décor of the Pavilion.  Vintage mis-matching chairs, sand fence, fabric, drift wood, succulents and candles everywhere!  We love the accent lighting by Superlative Events.  It is so nice once you throw flash on to have the ambient purple, blue and amber light around the room.

Just Desserts made a gorgeous and delicious cake as always!  In front of the two Adirondack chair cake toppers were two teeny replicas of the couple's flip flop wedding shoes.

The cake cutting went a little better than the key lime pie practice they did after our first look.   I love the drift wood cake stand and accent lighting thrown on the cake.

Coastal DJ had everyone up on the dance floor, including these tots!

The sound has the best sunsets!  It looks so pretty too when there is café lights strung out to the gazebo.
