Cuban Refugee Boats | Hatteras Island

Hurricane Matthew Aftermath

We drove to Ocracoke Island last weekend, and on the side of the road in the gas station parking lot, were the refugee boats that washed on shore in Hatteras Island, NC. It was such an eye opener to see these, we have it so good here.

Trying to explain to Poppy why someone would ride on these handmade boats in the ocean with so much danger lurking behind every wave was difficult. She wanted to know how they got the material, where it came from, what were the people like? Were their babies on the boat, did they get sunburned, where did they pee? Why were there throat lozenges, but no vegetables?

It's hard to imagine their lives, all the families that were on these, and the stories they hold.

Were these boats traveling together? Did the people on them make it to their destination? Were they apprehended by the Coast Guard and sent back to Cuba? We hope wherever they are, they're safe, loved, and better now then they were when they departed on their trip.

The images at the end with the people in them are not mine, they were ones I googled to show the girls what the boats would have looked like at sea with people riding in them.
